Mount Pearl deputy mayor Nicole Kieley is taking a medical leave of absence until Sept. 30, 2026, as approved by council during the May 26 regular meeting.
Kieley said she is taking the leave after careful consideration due to ‘significant personal and family circumstances’ and the impacts it may have on her capacity and well being.
“Serving the people of Mount Pearl has been one of the greatest honours of my life and my commitment to our community remains unwavering. Right now, I need to take the necessary time and space to focus on my family and health with the intention of returning to continue the work I care so deeply about,” Kieley said, thanking the community, staff and council colleagues for their understanding and compassion. “It has meant more than I could express.”
Mayor Dave Aker reminded everyone that Kieley’s service is not over, that he looks forward to having her back and that he would endeavour to keep her up to date as much as possible.
“We wish you, from a medical perspective, a good journey,” Aker said, adding that they will be there to support both Kieley and her family during this time.
“We look forward to, down the road, seeing more of you here in this chamber and whatnot, but in the meantime I am glad you are taking time to take care of yourself and your family.”
Council approved the medical leave of absence, as recommended, starting May 27. The leave is pursuant to Section 2.4 of the City of Mount Pearl Council Remuneration and Reimbursement Regulations.
“A councillor may take a leave of absence without remuneration, with approval from council,” stated councillor Bill Antle prior to making the motion.
Kieley was first elected in September 2021, earning the most votes of any council candidate in that election and served as deputy mayor. She was re-elected in October 2025, again earning the most votes of any council candidate, and resumed duties as deputy mayor.
