Driving along Sagona Avenue, it’s impossible to miss the over 20-foot-high wrench decorating the yard of the United Association of Journeymen & Apprentices Local 740. That’s the official handle of the province’s plumbers and pipefitters’ union.
Mount Pearl charm
Last week, about 80 UK Scouts traded in the double decker buses, red phone booths, and Brexit anxiety of jolly old England for the maritime charms of Newfoundland.
At least some things about the province reminded them of home, like the Metric system – and the rain.
The adventure actually began for the scouters two weeks back, when they packed their bags for the 24th World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia, attended by Scouts from all over the world.
Pythons help province win eastern Canadian championship
Mount Pearl Junior High Pythons made their presence known at the Eastern Elite Championships in Halifax this past week.
The tournament saw 19 teams from all across the Atlantic provinces competing across four divisions. U15 Girls; U15 Boys; U17 Girls; and U17 Boys.
Lost and found: Grandfather’s lost ring returned to CBS boy one year later
It had been an entire year since it was first lost, but one boy’s ring was finally found.
The Muddy Hole is a popular swimming spot in Seal Cove. Approximately one year ago, in July of 2018, Jacob Smith of Conception Bay South was gifted a ring from his grandmother that had once belonged to his grandfather. The ring, which Smith told The Shoreline is called an Eagle’s Eye, was a gift he was very proud of.
Mount Pearl honours it’s best
A new venue and a new timing for an old set of awards is how Mount Pearl Mayor Dave Aker explained the newly minted Best In Mount Pearl Awards Ceremony, held July 18 at the Reid Community Centre. It combined both the Citizen of the Year Award Ceremony and the Pearl Awards.
The right stuff
Denise Fagan of Mount Pearl is the proud recipient of Hockey NL’s Female Hockey Promotion Award.
“I was honoured. I was emotional, I had tears in my eyes,” said Fagan, recalling the announcement earlier this summer. “There’s so many deserving people out there, and the fact that I got it, there’s no words to describe it.”
Wastewater worries
The mayors of Mount Pearl, Paradise, and St. Johns are tightening the pressure on local MPs and the federal government to either allow more time for them to comply with new federal wastewater treatment rules, or provide money to help pay for the work needed to make them compliant.
No sheep allowed
The City of Mount Pearl is amending regulations governing feathered, furry, and scaled companions.
During July 9 meeting, council approved several amendments to it’s Animal Control Regulations, which provide the City with the authority to regulate the keeping of cats and dogs, other domestic pets, and livestock.
Mount Pearl seeks input on recreation
The City of Mount Pearl is looking for public input on what recreation opportunities it can take advantage of, as it prepares a Recreation Master Plan, which will guide programming and facilities for the years 2020-2030.
Millennials, a sense of place, and the economy
The mayor of Bonavista, international speaker, COO of Bonavista Living and Bonavista Creative, John Norman, was in St. John’s Thursday, June 27.
And not for the opening of the new Costco, either.
Norman spoke to the Mount Pearl/Paradise Chamber of Commerce of the economic development of rural Bonavista over the past several years.
